The Future of File Sharing – FrostWire and the Open Source Revolution
Open source programs such as FrostWire have been around for a long time. The first instances of open source programming date back to the beginning of the internet era when the first websites appeared. The term “open source” itself, however, only made its debut later on in the 1990s when the idea of free sharing of software information really became popular.

The Impact of BitTorrent Clients
Even though the BitTorrent protocol has been on the web only since 2001, it almost instantly became an amazing success. Previous file sharing methods and networks have often been seen as sluggish and many considered them as not being reliable enough to cope with the overwhelming demand for efficiency that the growing number of internet users has created.

There have been countless of BitTorrent clients designed over these past few years. Some of these, like FrostWire, have developed quite a reputation as more and more internet users have started using them. FrostWire and the Advances in File Sharing Technology
FrostWire is seen by many as one of the best pieces of software designed solely for the purpose of working with torrent files. The open source client appeared for the first time in 2004 as a descendent of Limewire, a client that ran on the Gnutella network. While it retained part of the old design and structure of Limewire, the new program proved to be a much more enhanced version of the old Gnutella client.

Support for BitTorrent was added at first as part of the novelties that came with this new file sharing application. Even though the protocol was only in its beginning years back then, its rapid growing popularity convinced the developers to drop Gnutella support completely so that with the release of version 5, FrostWire started to only use the BitTorrent network.

BitTorrent file sharing is quite unique when compared with other networks. Basically, torrent files are small data files containing hashes that correspond with the shared files themselves. These files have a .torrent extension and are the means by which peers can download files from seeders. The exact information that the files contain depends on the version of the BitTorrent protocol.

Unlike most BitTorrent clients, FrostWire has support for the newest DHT (data hash table) Torrent downloads. This simply means that the improved technology allows the location of various peers to be much easier to get to than using other clients, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the program. Apart from this, the program is also light and easy to work with. Available for all operating systems, it provides extensive support for downloading large files and folders and, best of all, being open source and thus free, it comes without any adware or other troublesome additions that most shareware applications have.

The Future of Open Source File Sharing
With the continual development of new and improved open source software, slowly but surely, the popularity of open source programs is growing. There are many excellent operating systems and applications that are continually being perfected and FrostWire is an excellent example of the quality and efficiency that open source programming has reached these days.

Many experts consider that the future will bring many more applications online. This basically means that the importance of file sharing will continue to grow and, with the improvements in download speed and the overall betterment of quality in the case of networks and technology, BitTorrent networks and similar protocols will be the only ones to “survive” as the new changes will make the older and slower networks obsolete. According to most of the developers who monitor such changes constantly, open source programs with the quality of FrostWire are perfect examples of what future file sharing software will look like.
